San Angelo Prostate Cancer Care
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer type among men in the United States—not including skin cancer—with the American Cancer Society stating that “about 1 man in 8 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.” The prostate gland is responsible for producing seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm.
Prostate cancer occurs when malignant cells form in the prostate gland, and nearly all prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas. Most prostate cancers grow slowly and may not present symptoms until later stages.
Symptoms of prostate cancer may include:
- Frequent urination, particularly at night
- Weak or inconsistent flow of urine
- Pain or a burning sensation while urinating
- Blood present in the urine or semen
- Trouble urinating or emptying the bladder completely
- Chronic back, hip, or pelvis pain
It is important to note that these symptoms can also be tied to other conditions, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia. If you are suffering from any of the above issues, we recommend contacting your primary care physician, who may recommend you to one of our experienced urologists.
Diagnosis & Treatment of Prostate Cancer
At Shannon, we work collaboratively to provide a multidisciplinary approach to prostate cancer diagnosis and care. Our urologists, oncology physicians, oncology surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, technicians, specialized nurses, and support staff all work together to deliver compassionate and comprehensive treatment. We utilize the most advanced diagnostic equipment available, including CT scans, MRIs, transrectal ultrasound, and PET scans—all performed in-house to ensure as streamlined of a process as possible.
If prostate cancer is detected, we continue to provide active surveillance methods to monitor if the tumor has metastasized. Depending on the stage or Grade Group of your prostate cancer, our oncology team will create a treatment plan that may include surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy. If surgery is a viable treatment option, Shannon utilizes advanced, robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy to provide a minimally invasive prostate removal solution.
With a state-of-the-art oncology facility, innovative treatments, and trusted professionals, Shannon has become a trusted name in local prostate cancer care. We deliver highly personalized diagnosis, treatment, and recovery services throughout San Angelo and the surrounding areas.
