Shannon Clinic Physicians Named Super Doctors

Seven Shannon Clinic physicians were named Super Doctors® by Texas Monthly Magazine in its December 2019 issue. Stuart Abramson, MD, PhD, Stacy Beaty, MD, Raj Cheruku, MD, David Huchton, MD, Ty Hughston, MD, Andrew Hume, MD, and Thomas Kingman, MD, were recognized on the magazine’s annual list of physician specialists “highly recommended by their peers,” according to the magazine. In addition, Genevieve Pfluger Mejia, MD, was named to the publication’s Rising Stars list, published earlier this year.

Dr. Abramson, a specialist in allergy and immunology, has practiced at Shannon Clinic for eight years. He has been included on the Super Doctors list consecutively since 2011. Dr. Abramson attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston where he earned both a PhD in Immunology and his medical degree. He completed his internship and residency in Pediatrics at Baylor Affiliated Hospitals. Dr. Abramson then fulfilled his medical staff fellowship in allergy and immunology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Allergy & Immunology (a conjoint board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics) and in Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology.
Dr. Beaty, a specialist in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, joined Shannon Clinic in 2009. He received his medical degree and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Houston Medical School. He then completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. Dr. Beaty is board certified in orthopedic surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Physicians. He was recognized on the 2018 Texas Super Doctors Rising Stars list.
Dr. Cheruku, a specialist in hematology and oncology, has practiced at Shannon Clinic for 18 years combined. He has been named to the Super Doctors list 18 times. Dr. Cheruku received his medical degree from Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, India. He then completed his internship at St. Louis Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., and his residency at Edward Hines, Jr. V.A. Hospital and Foster McGaw Hospital of the Loyola University in Illinois. Dr. Cheruku also completed a fellowship in the division of hematology-oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Mich.
Dr. Huchton, an otolaryngology and head and neck surgery specialist, has practiced at Shannon Clinic since 2001. He has been named to the Super Doctors list 13 times since 2004. Dr. Huchton received his medical degree from the University of California's San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship and ear, nose and throat residency and oncologic surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He is board certified and fellowship trained in head and neck surgery. Dr. Huchton came to San Angelo from Baltimore where he practiced otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and served as an assistant professor with the facility’s school of medicine.
Dr. Hughston, specializing in internal medicine, has practiced at Shannon Clinic for 29 years. He received his medical degree from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple. Dr. Hughston is board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has been included on the Super Doctors list consecutively since 2010.
Dr. Hume, a specialist in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, has practiced at Shannon Clinic for seven years. He has been named to the Super Doctors list 12 times since 2004. As a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disease of the heart, lungs, chest, esophagus and major blood vessels of the body. Dr. Hume received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, Mississippi. He then completed residencies in general surgery and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Hume is board certified in general surgery and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. For ten years, he operated the largest practice of lung and esophageal surgery in Austin and previously served as the director of thoracic surgery at Seton Medical Center in Austin and as the surgical director of arrhythmia surgery at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin.
Dr. Kingman, specializing in neurosurgery, joined Shannon Clinic in January 2018. He has been named to the Super Doctors list the past 21 years. Dr. Kingman received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and completed his general surgery and neurological surgery residencies at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
The Texas Super Doctors Rising Stars edition looks to the future of medicine by recognizing outstanding physicians who have been fully licensed to practice medicine in their respective specialty for 10 years or less. According to the publication, “these doctors have made noteworthy achievements early in their careers and are rising through the ranks in their field.”
Dr. Pfluger Mejia, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, completed her medical degree at Saint George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada and her obstetrics and gynecology residency at the Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. She is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has practiced in her hometown of San Angelo since 2012. She provides care for women of all ages and holds special interest in infertility and minimally invasive robotic surgery. This is the second year Dr. Pfluger Mejia has been named to the Super Doctors Rising Stars list.
