Residency Program Requirements

How to Apply

The Shannon Internal Medicine Residency Program only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Residents are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Contact your dean's office for instructions and further information, as we will not accept any paper applications, nor do we accept unsolicited faxes or emails sent to our office.

Applicant Requirements

1. Graduation from a U.S. medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or a U.S. osteopathic medical school accredited by the American Association of College Accreditation (AOACOCA)
   
   or,


2. Graduation from a medical school outside the U.S. (International Medical Graduates or IMG’s) and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:
   1. Meeting all Texas State Board of Medical Examiners licensing requirements prior to acceptance, which includes holding a currently valid ECFMG certificate prior to starting the program and graduating from a school that is listed on the board’s list of approved schools.
      • Texas Medical Board Physician in Training (PIT) requirements and information
      • Full Texas Medical License requirements and information
   2. Holding a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Texas


3. Either upcoming graduation from medical school with the year of application or demonstration of uninterrupted additional training, military service, or active clinical medicine experience if already graduated from medical school.


4. Pass both Step 1 and 2 of the USMLE or Level 1 and 2 of the COMLEX exam within three attempts each. DO applicants do not have to take both COMLEX and USMLE - COMLEX is sufficient.


5. Be proficient in the spoken and written English language.


6. Be a U.S. citizen, permanent U.S. resident, or have an approved J-1 VISA sponsored through ECFMG by time of residency start. (Shannon Medical Center does not sponsor any other visas, including H1-B.)

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept applicants with previous GME experience accredited by ACGME including those on alternate pathways including ACGME-I residencies and fellowships.

Sending a signal is one of the many factors that we consider when extending interviews to applicants. It does increase your odds of receiving an interview but does not guarantee an interview.

Application Checklist

A complete ERAS application includes:

• USMLE/COMLEX score reports
• MSPE (Medical Student Performance Evaluation - formerly known as the Dean's Letter)
• Personal Statement that conveys your career and personal aspirations and journey in general or subspecialty internal medicine
• A transcript
• Three letters of reference (two of which must come from general or subspecialty internal medicine physicians)

Pre-Employment Requirements

Completed after MATCH, but must be passed to start clinical training.

• Pre-Employment Physical / Drug Screen Testing
• Background Check
