Welcome from Our Director

Welcome to the Shannon Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program.

At the heart of our training philosophy are three foundational pillars: Integrity, Communication, and Mission-Driven Purpose. These are more than guiding principles—they shape the way we teach, learn, and grow together as a community.

Our mission is to prepare physicians to thrive in both rural general medicine and competitive fellowship pathways. We believe that excellence in one enhances the other. Whether your career leads you to a community clinic or hospital or to subspecialize through fellowship, we are committed to giving you the skills, confidence, and mentorship you need to succeed. One of the ways we do this is through our unique POCUS and procedure curricula.

Here, you will always be treated with respect as a junior colleague, not just a trainee. Your voice matters. We foster an environment of mutual trust and collaboration where residents are empowered to take ownership of their learning and their patients. Join us in building this new program from the ground up.

For those pursuing a fellowship, we provide comprehensive support, including dedicated faculty mentorship and robust research opportunities through our affiliation with Texas A&M University College of Medicine to align with your professional goals. From scholarly activity to personalized application guidance, we are invested in your future.

Our Program places a strong emphasis on practicing in rural and underserved areas to build lasting relationships and meet the unique needs of communities like ours. It is our sincere hope that, after your fellowship, you will consider returning to West Texas, where your skills are deeply needed and your impact can be profoundly felt.

We also believe that a deep sense of wellness and purpose sustains great physicians. Burnout is not a badge of honor—it is a risk we take seriously. Through structured wellness programming, peer support, and a culture that values work-life balance, we help our residents build a fulfilling, sustainable career.

Above all, our program is anchored in integrity and open communication. We will support your growth, not only as a physician but as a person with goals, values, and a vision for the future.

If you are looking for a program where your purpose is honored, your voice is heard, and your training prepares you to lead with both heart and skill, we welcome you to join us.

Warm regards,
