Ready, Set, Go!

Ready, Set, Go!

Each April, students in kindergarten through sixth grade gather at San Angelo Stadium to run the final distance of a marathon during the CATCH in Motion Kids Marathon Celebration. This event, now in its 10th year, was created to provide an opportunity for students to participate in a program that encourages healthy habit formation early in life.

"This event truly is something that should be celebrated," says Starr Long, Shannon Health and Wellness. "Each student is encouraged to walk or run a total of 26 miles before the Celebration Lap. They start tracking these during their PE classes. The kids get to see their hard work pay off when their family members, classmates, teachers, student athletes and members of the community are cheering for them."

The first 300 students receive a medal and a T-shirt upon completing their Celebration Lap. Afterward, they can participate in free activities and receive information about summer programs from various community organizations. There will also be a drawing and giveaways for prizes, including Angelo State University sports season passes, San Angelo ISD sports season passes and much more. Local high school and collegiate athletes and mascots will be on the field to join in on the activities and pose for photos.

"We welcome all students to join us and be proud of everything they have accomplished, regardless of how far they have run," says Starr. "They are inspired to include their families and teachers in joining them in a healthy lifestyle, and that is amazing to see."

Thank you to SAISD, Angelo State University, Angelo Awards, Armstrong Backus Co. LLP, Big Country T's and the YMCA for joining Shannon in sponsoring the Kids Marathon.
