DEXA/Bone Density Screening
Osteoporosis often develops without symptoms until a fracture occurs. A
DEXA Bone Density Scan is the gold standard for assessing bone health.
It's a quick, safe and painless test that measures bone strength and helps
identify your risk for osteoporosis and fractures. Early detection can
detect bone loss before fractures happen, helping you and your healthcare
provider create a plan to keep your bones strong.
Why choose a DEXA Scan?
- Quick exam, typically completed in minutes
- Non-invasive and painless
- Low radiation exposure
- Helps identify Osteoporosis, Osteopenia and Fracture risk
1 in every 2 women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.
Risk factors for osteoporosis include:
- Age - 50 and older
- Family history
- Certain medication and diseases
- Have recently broken a bone
Who Should Consider a DEXA Scan?
- Women age 65 and older
- Men age 70 and older
- Postmenopausal women with risk factors
- Adults with a history of fractures

How to Prepare for Your Imaging Procedure
If you have a scheduled appointment, please discuss the procedure and any
special instructions with your doctor before you arrive. If a test is
ordered while you are a patient at the hospital, your physician, nurse,
or technologist can explain the procedure and answer any questions you have.
These general guidelines will help you prepare for and stay comfortable
during your procedure:
-
Wear loose-fitting clothes. Don’t wear items containing metal. You may be asked to change into
a hospital gown. In some cases, you may be asked to remove jewelry, watches,
hairpins, eyeglasses, or dentures.
-
Some tests require that you go without eating or drinking for a specified time beforehand. Be sure to ask your doctor about this
at least 24 hours before your procedure.
-
Tell your technologist if there is any chance you may be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding.
-
Tell your technologist if you are allergic to iodine.
-
Some procedures require you to
remain motionless for a period of time. Your technologist will explain what you need to do for a successful procedure.
