Shannon Medical Center Big Spring is part of Shannon Health, a locally governed, nonprofit health system that has proudly served West Texas for more than 90 years. In April 2026, Shannon was approached by community leaders to assume ownership of the Big Spring hospital and help strengthen healthcare services for the region. With a mission of providing exceptional care for its family, friends, and neighbors, Shannon is committed to ensuring access to high quality care for the residents of Howard County and beyond.
Today, Shannon is making significant investments in facilities, technology, equipment, clinical resources, and physician recruitment as we work alongside the community to expand access to high-quality care close to home. The hospital is a full-service community hospital licensed for 126 beds and serves as a Level IV Trauma Facility for a large rural service area. It is supported by a network of local clinics and providers, allowing patients to access coordinated care close to home. Additional growth plans include increasing access to specialty services such as cardiology, orthopedics, oncology, and neurosurgery, as well as upgrading facilities and adding urgent care and advanced diagnostic capabilities. The implementation of Epic electronic medical records further reflects Shannon's commitment to providing coordinated, patient-centered care.
With almost 5,000 team members and more than 450 providers in 40 medical specialties across 30+ locations, Shannon’s mission is to provide exceptional care for its family, friends and neighbors. We are guided by our Vision to be the trusted healthcare leader in west Texas and believe the people at Shannon are our most valuable resource in providing the very best care for our patients. We promote our Shannon values daily through our work throughout the organization.
