Residency Program Requirements

How to Apply

The Shannon Family Medicine Residency Program only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Residents are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Contact your dean's office for instructions and further information, as we will not accept any paper applications, nor do we accept unsolicited faxes sent to our office.

Applicant Requirements

All applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent U.S. resident. Our residency does not sponsor any type of visa.
  • Have graduated from medical school within the last ten years.
  • Meet the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners licensing requirements prior to acceptance. You must be a graduate of an accredited school of medicine or osteopathic school, and it must be listed on the Texas State Board of Medical Examiner's list of approved schools.
  • Have passed Step 1, Step 2.
  • Be proficient in spoken and written English language.
  • Have at least one year of U.S. clinical experience, defined as "supervised direct patient care." Research or observership positions, which do not entail a significant involvement in the medical management of patients, do not fulfill the spirit of this requirement.

*Additionally, international graduates must be certified by the ECFMG.
