A healthy start to a new year

The year 2020 is officially over, and it's time to celebrate new beginnings! Leave behind all the stress and negativity of the past year with a new start and healthier lifestyle.

Community Health Club is now Shannon Health Club, featuring the same excellent staff, amenities and services! This full-service, nationally recognized facility is home to the largest group exercise programs in the Concho Valley. It offers over 75 classes per week in yoga, cycling/spinning, water aerobics and land exercises.

The club offers 20 "Active Agers" classes per week and hosts the largest array of Les Mills classes in San Angelo. Group exercise classes are open to individuals ages 12 and above, with experience levels ranging from beginner to advanced. In addition, the club has a dedicated group exercise class Facebook page for its members, which features livestream classes and recorded classes taught by Shannon Health Club instructors. This is a great way for members to try out a class in the comfort of their own home or still enjoy a workout in case they miss a class.

"The focus of Shannon Health Club is the health of the community members of the Concho Valley," says Janet Charlesworth, Shannon Health Club Director. "No matter your age or skill level, there is a place for you here. It really is a family-friendly environment. We're not just a fitness facility—this is where friends are made."

A range of options

The facility also offers services such as personal training (one-on-one, buddy and group), massage therapy, private swim lessons, health coaching, child care for children ages 6 months to 11 years, and free personalized workout orientation for new members. A wide array of cardio equipment, free weights, weight-training equipment, a heated indoor pool and hot tub, an indoor walking/jogging track, a half basketball court, wallyball court and racquetball courts, saunas, and locker rooms are also available for member use.

Experienced staff

Each of the 17 personal trainers and 24 group exercise instructors hold national certifications in each class they teach. In addition, some hold multiple fitness certifications from nationally accredited fitness organizations. All Health Club staff is CPR- and AED-certified.

"Our staff has really set the bar high," Janet says. "Each member is fully dedicated to serving and helping our members in any way possible, regardless of fitness level, age or stage of life. Eighteen staff members have worked at the Health Club for over 10 years, which has helped us build a very strong, loyal and dedicated team to serve our members."

Among their national recognitions are: Distinguished Achievement Award from the Medical Fitness Association, Fitness Management Nova 7 Award, Program Innovation Award from the Medical Fitness Association and the "Steppin' Out" National Walking Challenge winner, sponsored by the Medical Fitness Association.

"We continually strive to be innovative with our fitness programming, while also making the club a fun and safe environment for our members," Janet says. "The Shannon Health Club has something for everyone, and we want people to know it is a place they can come and feel right at home."

Shannon Health Club will receive some major updates in 2021. These include:

  • Renovations to men's and women's locker rooms.
  • Updates to the pool surface and heater.
  • Refreshing the men's and women's saunas.
  • New flooring.
  • Equipment upgrades: Matrix, spinning bikes, dumbbells, Nautilus circuit, cable crossover machines.
  • Updated security and landscaping.

Many precautions and safety measures have been taken since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The club has implemented additional precautions to safeguard the health of their members by implementing many methods, including a more frequent sanitizing schedule, mask requirements and class size management.
